It is hard to find a shop that doesn’t have a name, or a shop name that will make you stop and ask yourself why.
But one that will do that much is the Irish Bike Shop.
Its been named as one of the best places in the world for bikes, and one of Ireland’s most popular tourist attractions, thanks to the large crowds that flock to its shop every year.
“The shop is so popular, you can’t just walk in and have a bike,” says John McConaghy, a bike mechanic from Clare.
It has been a success for many reasons.
The shop sells a wide range of bicycles, and its staff are passionate about their work, making sure customers are well-served.
John McConachys father-in-law owns a shop in Dublin, so the family bought the shop and have been using it for more than 40 years.
He said it was the best way to see Ireland, as it was so different.
I think there are so many different things in Ireland and it has always been a part of our culture.
“When I first moved to Dublin, I bought my first bike and then my second bike, and then I bought two bikes for my daughter, and they’re still in the shop, so we’re still here,” he said.
Now that his shop has grown, it is one of many, and there is a growing number of Irish shops that cater for tourists.
Bicycle touring is also booming, with the number of people travelling from Europe to Ireland quadrupling between 2015 and 2016, according to the Irish Bicycle Touring Association (IBTA).
“It’s becoming an increasingly popular way to explore Ireland, so it’s very much a tourism activity in itself,” says Brendan O’Hara, from the IBTA.
Tourism is a very big part of the economic activity here, so its very easy to see why it’s become a popular activity,” he says.
While Ireland has a small population, it has a strong reputation for being a great place to travel.”
The tourists we have are fantastic people, they come from all over the world and they are passionate and happy,” says O’Herreann.
They are attracted by the scenery, the places to go, and the history.”
Tourists come here, not just to see the sights but also to explore and to get a taste of what Ireland has to offer,” he adds.
Irish visitors can enjoy a range of cultural attractions such as museums, castles and gardens, while their holidaymakers will also find some of the most picturesque beaches in Ireland.
So it’s no surprise that tourists love it here, especially when it comes to cycling.
O’Herresons dad is also a member of the IBATA and has been cycling here for over 30 years.”
There are always a lot of people riding around on their bikes, but it’s a good way to get some exercise,” he explains.
There is no shortage of bike touring to be had in Ireland, and this is reflected in the number and quality of shops that sell bikes.
One of the main reasons for this is because there are a lot more people cycling now, and it’s all because of bikes.”
We had about 30,000 cyclists last year, that’s about four times the number we had in the 1990s,” says McConacchie.
McConaghys family is also avid cyclists and is happy to see his father-of-one becoming a more successful one.”
He’s not going to get rich out of it, he’s just trying to make it work,” he laughs.
For tourists, the best part of cycling in Ireland is the countryside, with stunning views, amazing views of the sea and a wide variety of scenery.
When it comes down to it, the only thing that really matters is to enjoy your holiday and see Ireland for what it is.
